Khardungla Pass

Overview

This beautiful place, “Khardungla Pass”, is located in the Ladakh range, and snowcapped mountains surround it in every direction. It is the highest motorable pass globally, with an elevation of approximately 18,379 feet (5,602 meters), and it is only 40 kilometres away from Leh.
Khardungla is said to be located on the famous Caravan route that connected Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia. Thousands of horses and camels once traversed the way, and descendants of the camels and horses can now be seen at Hunder, a bit north of the region. The captivating scenery of this beautiful pass will leave you speechless.
The Khardungla pass was built in 1976 and opened to the public in 1988. The Border Roads Organization maintains it. Khardungla pass is vital because it can transport goods to nearby border locations.
The Khardungla pass is completely closed during the spring season due to the constant rain. Winters are unsuitable for this location due to the low temperatures that persist throughout the season. The severe cold and increased frequency of snowfall make it a challenging place to visit. A permit is required to visit this place; you will need an Inner Line Permit if you are an Indian tourist and a Protected Area Permit from outside of India.
Because it is a cold and windy place and is at a very high altitude, this place is usually covered in snow; heavy snowfall is a common occurrence here at the Khardungla top. It is best to visit this location from March to May during the summer. During the summer, the region receives abundant sunlight, with temperatures hovering around 21°C. Nights are relatively colder than days, with temperatures dropping to 7°C or lower. September and October are also viable options. While here is a list of other seasons:
  • Spring season – June-August:
Because of the constant rain, Khardung La is inaccessible during June and August.
  • Winter season – January-February:
Winter is equally difficult because the region experiences heavy snowfall, making it impossible for tourists to access the road. During the winter, the temperature drops to -30 degrees Celsius.
The Khardung La Pass is one of the most exciting places to visit in Leh Ladakh. It is one of the world’s highest motorable roads. The views from here are breathtaking. It is a vital road, particularly for the Indian Army, as it transports various supplies to the Siachen Glacier. In contrast, it is a popular destination for adventure bikers who ride their bikes under the blue open skies.
