Pangong
Overview
Pangong Lake is a beautiful endorheic lake in the Himalayas located approximately 140 kilometers from Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, also known as Pangong Tso. It stretches from India to China. Pangong Lake, situated at the height of 4350 meters, is one of the country’s most widespread tourist destinations, and its beauty has drawn visitors worldwide and beyond.
Pangong Lake is usually visited as a day trip or an overnight stay. Altitude sickness is a major health concern while traveling here. The thinner the air, the less oxygen there is to breathe, resulting in low oxygen levels in the blood and tissues. Symptoms can range from a mild headache and fatigue to a more unusual buildup of fluid in the lungs or brain. As a result, acclimatization must be taken seriously. Furthermore, the sunrises and sunsets over the lake are breathtaking, so staying the night is highly recommended.
Pangong Lake got its name from the Tibetan word Banggong Co, a narrow and enchanted lake. Nobody knows how deep Pangong Lake is, but it’s thought to be around 300 feet. Although the lake is salty, it freezes in the winter. Bring plenty of winter clothing if you plan to visit this magical place. The weather is cold, and it gets even harder after dawn. You will find a wide range of options available during selecting accommodations, ranging from basic homestays to luxury tented camps.
Unlike many high mountain passes that close in the winter, it remains close for at least six months as it snows heavily. May to October is a more pleasant time to visit, with June and July being the busiest months. Because Pangong Lake is located in a border area, special permits are required to visit it. Indians must have an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Pangong Lake, while foreigners must have a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
This location is a bird lover’s paradise, especially with sightings of other birds such as rodents that are said to grow to the size of a dog. There’s not much to see but visit this location solely for its majesty and beauty. If photography is your hobby or a passion, you will love this place.
And an interesting thing about Pangong Lake is that it was featured in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, and those who have seen the movie will know the scenic beauty of Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake unparalleled.
