Sarchu
Overview
Sarchu, also called Sir Bhum Chun, is located on the Himachal Pradesh-Ladakh border at 14,500 feet above sea level. It is on the Leh-Manali Highway. Sarchu is an excellent place for travelers to stop. This welcoming rest stop is located halfway between the Baralacha La Pass and the Lachulung La Pass at an altitude of 4,201 m, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. It is an ideal halt point for travelers who want to take some rest and enjoy beautiful views, cool breezes, and the best overnight camping experience.
If you enjoy adventure, Sarchu is one of the best places to visit in Himachal. This place has several challenging trails that take trekkers through scenic routes and gorges. It is the starting point for a typical trek to the Zanskar region of Ladakh and provides tourists with a pleasant Tibetan experience. This romantic destination, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, is also ideal for honeymoon vacations, where one can enjoy relaxing holidays amidst beautiful landscapes and magnificent valleys.
Camping is the most adventurous thing to do in Sarchu. This place also offers hiking opportunities along the numerous hiking trails that you can find here. You can also relish the beauty of nature by taking a long walk along the Tsarap Chu River. In Sarchu, there isn’t much to see. The incomparable beauty of the rugged mountains and the soothing climate elevates it to another level.
Accomodation
Sarchu has a lot to offer visitors and backpackers who want to explore and have fun. Despite its remote location, it has various lodging options, including tented campsites. Even located at such a high altitude, these camps offer luxurious accommodations. These camps are scientifically designed, with entire canvas rooms and warm beds, and it also provides medical assistance, emergency transportation, meals, and other amenities to guests. Swiss Cottage Style Tents are windproof and waterproof, with an electric backup and attached toilets.
There is no power here, and the owners of the camps use generators for dinner. As a result, don’t forget to bring a torch. These tents are mostly affordable, depending on the month you visit. In most cases, the price includes the meals as well.
Best Time to Visit
- The summer season officially begins in April and lasts until July. During these months, temperatures range from 4°C to 25°C.
- In Sarchu, the Monsoon season begins in August and lasts until September. During these two months, the region receives a lot of rain.
People can only visit Sarchu when Leh-Manali Highway gets open. Hence, the most suitable time to visit Sarchu is between May and September, as the climate is slightly warmer. While in other months, it remains closed because of the freezing temperature, which ranges between -35°C to 3°C. Due to the high altitude, one can suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is the most common form of altitude sickness. As a result of decreased air pressure and oxygen levels, sleeping difficulties, fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, rapid heart rate, and shortness of breath are symptoms.
